Chương trình The South-South Exchange Programme for Research on the History Development thông báo chương trình học bổng và tập huấn khoa học (Workshop) với chủ đề Revolutions and Nationalism Revisited.

.

Call for applications
The 20th Century:
Revolutions and Nationalism Revisited
April 17 – 30, 2011- Lima (Peru)

This Workshop focuses on the most significant revolutions of the 20th century and their impact on
questions of nationalism and identity. The aim of the workshop is to study how shifts from monarchy to democracy, populism and dictatorship took place across the Global South and how revolutions and civil wars changed the meaning of concepts such as nationalism and identity.
The Workshop will be organized around the comparative experiences of Africa, the Middle East, Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America. It will bring together about 10 young historians and historically inclined social scientists for two weeks of collective reflection, knowledge building and training. The participants will follow a program designed to permit them to share experiences, improve the theoretical and methodological quality of their work, and deepen their comparative insights.

The 20th century was a century of revolutions. It was a time in which important historic social and
political changes happened, such as the Russian and Chinese Revolution. In addition to these “violent” revolutions we witnessed the collapse of the Berlin Wall and of communism in Eastern Europe, the end of apartheid in South Africa, the downfall of Marcos' regime in the Philippines and the liberation
of East Timor. Moreover, many social and technological “revolutions” took place such as the emancipation of women and the development of the internet. These and many other events reconfigured the geopolitical structure of the globe.

This Workshop proposes not only to bring a wide range of additional, long-overlooked cases into the literature on revolutions and nationalism but also to begin the crucial task of formulating well structured comparisons across different empirical examples.
Theme and Content of the Workshop
The South-South Exchange Programme for
Research on the History Development

The Workshop offers an opportunity for young scholars from the Global South to engage in research and debates on revolutions and nationalism. The objective of the workshop is to stimulate a historically grounded, comparative analysis of these topics, with the goal of promoting reflections on the origins, directions and changes in the concepts, especially in the light of recent times.
Participants will be encouraged to carry out their reflections in a comparative perspective. They will also be offered practical support in sharpening their research project, and submit a research proposal for funding.
The Workshop is open to PhD and MA students registered in Southern universities, i.e., Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America and the Caribbean. The age limit is 35 years. Please note that the working language of the workshop is English. All applicants are strictly required to be proficient in English.
The grant will provide for the participants' airfare, accommodation, readings, a modest stipend, and an excursion. Snacks and lunch will be provided during the workshop proper and meals during the excursion.
Applications should include the following:
1. A Curriculum Vitae (maximum of two pages)
2. A research proposal outlining the candidate's current research project, including the methodology that is being employed or considered (at most four pages)
3. A scanned letter certifying registration in a doctoral or Master program at a university in the South and the stage of the program the student is at.
4. A scanned letter from the thesis supervisor indicating why this workshop will be of importance
to the applicant
5. The candidate should fill an application form (download from).
6. A copy of the passport.
7. Applications must be written in English. The deadline for submission is 28th of February 2011. An international scientific committee will examine the applications of the candidates by the first week of March 2011. Successful applicants will be notified immediately after the completion of the selection process.

Call for Applications
ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT
APRIL 15-24, 2011

The last two decades have witnessed the proliferation of the rhetoric and deployment of a wide range of techniques and methods variously lumped under the rubric of the visual and/or the sensory. This acceleration has been reflected in social science research (e.g. MA and PhD dissertations) as well as in the fields of development-oriented engagements by NGOs, and in human rights/activists agenda. These techniques include, but are not limited to, recourse to documentary film, video recordings, photographic imaging, and voice recordings, among others. A host of assumptions ranging from “being alternative” or aiming to “capture authentic” voice and experience, to liberatory, democratizing, and radical, have underpinned this trend.
Meanwhile, and despite such proliferation, there is an unequal geography of training, resources
and capacity in the field of the visual, particularly in many contexts of the Global South where such tools have also witnessed expansion in use. Yet, what underlies this movement beyond the written and what relationships to the word are assumed in such processes of knowledge production and strategies for promoting social change?
This workshop hopes to address the following questions in the form of training and dialogue with young scholars in the Global South:
► What epistemological questions and assumptions are embedded in the move towards
the visual and/or the sensory?
► What methodological concerns are at stake?
► What constitutes the visual and the sensory and what relationships prevail between
them? What can visual knowledge tell us about particular facades of social realities?
► What is the historicity of visual knowledge and its deployment in social science and
among members of civil society
► What are the social conditions of production that inform the recourse to the visual and
what political economies shape its production?
This workshop aims to address these questions by offering a 10-day training and reflection workshop to a group of 12-15 young scholars and intellectuals of social movements (activists) from different parts of the Global South. Three experts in the field of visual methodologies from the South will guide the workshop sessions and work with selected candidates in refining their projects.
Prior to the workshop, supporting material (a reading packet) will be distributed among selected candidates, who will be asked to engage the readings in relationship to their particular interests and proposed projects. This will take the form of a short essay to be emailed to the trainers and organizers prior to the workshop. During the workshop sessions, questions arising from the readings will be discussed in light of the projects, concerns, experiences and challenges participants bring to the debate. Hands-on experience and trials with technical aspects of using visual methods will constitute part of the training. The last two days will be devoted to refining the proposals based on the knowledge and experience gained from the workshop. The workshop and all reading material will be in English.
SEPHIS will cover travel and accommodation expenses of selected candidates and provide access to workshop supporting material. SEPHIS has been engaged in networking among researchers across the Global South since 1994. The fundamental goal of the programme is to encourage researchers located in the South to expand their scholarly horizons and to cultivate links with their colleagues in other parts of the South. The objective of the SEPHIS programme is to support dialogue and collaboration between researchers from the South with their respective visions of development and history, to encourage comparative research, and to strengthen research capacity in the South.
Participants will be drawn from 1) students enrolled in MA and/or PhD programs in the Global South; and 2) researchers engaged in local NGOs and social movements who aim to utilize visual methods in their program of research and action.
Those interested in participating are invited to submit their applications by email to the workshop organizers listed below no later than February 7, 2011. Notification of successful applications will be emailed to candidates by the first week of March 2011.
To apply please send the following material:
1) Updated CV
2) 2000 word description of project/proposal outlining:
■ The main questions of inquiry
■ How and why visual methods and techniques are pertinent to the project
■ Which texts/interlocutors have been central in shaping the use of visual approaches in the project
Please email your application material no later than FEBRUARY 7, 2011 to: Hanan Sabea, hsabea@aucegypt.edu
Mark Westmoreland, mrw@aucegypt.edu

Call for applications
Workshop on
Alternative Research Methodologies
Organized by the SEASREP Foundation, supported by Sephis
17-28 October 2011

The fifth SEASREP-Sephis training workshop on Alternative Research Methodologies will take place in the Philippines on 17-28 October 2011. The workshop aims to provide PhD students from the South an opportunity to strengthen the theoretical and methodological quality of their work under the guidance of experienced researchers from the South. Two weeks of lectures and discussions, knowledge building, and individual tutorials on research proposals will enable the participants to redesign their research project, improve their proposal and enhance their research capabilities.
Workshop Programme
The workshop will consist of two parts: the lecture and discussion portion, and the revision of research proposals.
The lectures will focus on two methods: rereading the archives, and orality and oral techniques. Readings determined by the lecturers will be sent to participants ahead of the workshop to maximize the time for discussion. Participants will submit brief reaction papers to the readings a month prior to the workshop, for distribution and discussion during the workshop proper. The lecturers may divide the participants into groups or assign individual participants to lead the discussion. Discussions are envisioned to be open and free, as participants are expected to examine the readings in light of their own situation and research experiences, share their insights, and draw out comparisons across countries and regions in the South.
The second part of the workshop will begin with a presentation by participants of their preliminary proposals in order to solicit comments from lecturers and co-participants that will help them improve their proposals. The presentation will be followed by individual tutorial sessions in which experienced researchers will comment on the participants’ PhD proposals. Participants will then be given two days to revise their proposals.
The workshop will conclude with a presentation by the participants of their revised proposals, with a commentator assigned to each panel of participants.
The workshop will be conducted in English; readings will also be in English.
Eligibility
PhD students from the South in the field of Social Sciences or History, who are in the process of formulating their dissertation proposals, and who are registered in universities in the South, may apply. Priority will be given to applicants who have not taken part in any Sephis workshop and have not received a Sephis grant. Students in an advanced stage of dissertation research are also not eligible.
Travel Grants
The grant will provide for the participants’ airfare, accommodation, readings, modest stipend, and local excursions. Snacks and lunch will be provided during the workshop proper and meals during the excursion.
Expectations of Participants
The workshop presents an excellent opportunity to benefit from the knowledge shared by experts in the field as well as to meet and learn from PhD students from other parts of the South. Participants are thus expected to use this opportunity as much as they can, to read the materials, engage in the discussions, and improve their research proposals.
1. Participants will write one to two pages of comments on the readings and email their reaction papers to the lecturer concerned and to SEASREP. Grant funds will be remitted by SEASREP upon receipt of the reaction papers.
2. Participants will present their preliminary research proposals early in the workshop, improve their proposals, and present the revised proposals on the last day.
Application Procedure
Interested PhD students need to submit:
1. Curriculum vitae
2. Application form (download from http://www.seasrepfoundation.org)
3. Brief research proposal (background, main thesis and objectives, scope and limitations, brief review of primary literature, and potential contribution of the study)
4. Scanned letter certifying registration in a doctoral program at a university in the South and the stage of the program the student is at
5. Scanned recommendation of the thesis adviser
Applications must be written in English and submitted by email no later than 15 June 2011 to the SEASREP Foundation at methods@seasrepfoundation.org. A selection committee will review the applications and notices of acceptance will be sent out by email at the end of July.
